From the Pasadena Star-News:

PASADENA – Police are looking for a man and two children who struck an ice cream vendor in the head with a baseball bat Sunday during a failed robbery in Pasadena, authorities said.

The crime took place about 3 p.m. in the 400 block of N. Chester Avenue, Pasadena police Lt. Keith Jones said. The robbery was carried out by two boys about 12 to 14 years old and a man who appeared between 18 and 20.

The ice cream vendor, an El Sereno man in his 40s, was walking with his ice cream cart when the two children approached on scooters and asked for ice cream, the lieutenant said.

“As the victim was reaching to get them what they wanted, the older suspect came from behind and struck the victim in the head with a baseball bat,” Jones said.

The vendor fell to the ground and the children tried unsuccessfully to pull his fanny pack off, he said.

“The victim was able to fight off the suspects, and they all ran northbound on Chester Avenue,” Jones said.

The young suspects left their scooters behind, he added.

The injured man was taken to Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, Jones said, where he was treated and released later Sunday.

MONROVIA – A knife-wielding crook robbed a man Friday in Old Town, police said.

The crime was reported shortly after noon in an alley in the 100 block of West Colorado Boulevard, Monrovia police Lt. Nels Ortlund said.

The victim, a Monrovia man of about 60 years old, was walking down the alley when he was confronted by the robber, who brandished a knife and demanded property from the man, the lieutenant said.

The Pasadena Star-News reports that sketches of the Arcadia home invasion robbers have been released.

Authorities released a composite drawing Thursday of the men. One is Latino, 25 to 30 years old, unshaven, with spiky hair. A second robber is Latino, about 30 and clean-shaven. The third man also is Latino, in his early 30s and clean-shaven.

The family’s home in the 100 block of West Forest Avenue was broken into at about 7:20 a.m. Sunday. The mother, father and their 9-year-old son were bound. The gunmen choked the father and demanded money before leaving with cash and jewelry.

Folks on the Pasadena Neighborhood Watch email list were barraged this week with a flurry of email alerts from neighbors and the Pasadena Police Department regarding a series of criminal confrontations. The Pasadena Star-News has the details on one of the incidents:

Two teenage boys used a handgun to carry out a home invasion robbery Friday, police said.

The crime occurred about 6:30 a.m. at a house in the 1100 block of Romney Drive, Pasadena police Lt. Chris Russ said.

A 47-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman were home but were not injured, the lieutenant said.

“They were in bed when they awoke to suspects inside their home,” Russ said.

One of the robbers pointed a gun at the man, as the crooks proceeded to help themselves to a laptop computer, a Rolex watch, a small amount of cash and other items, he said.
They also stole a key to car parked in the driveway, but were apparently unable to start it after they jammed the key in the ignition, Russ added.

“As the suspects were leaving, the male victim came outside and confronted them,” he said.

The armed robber fired one shot at another parked car belonging to the man, Russ said, before fleeing on foot toward Church Street.

Police searched with a helicopter and a bloodhound but were unable to find the robbers, he said.

One of the robbers was described as a Latino boy of 15 or 16 years old, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and between 140 and 150 pounds. He had short black hair, wore all black clothing with black tennis shoes and carried a small silver handgun.

The other robber was also 15 or 16 and was either black with a light complexion or Latino with a dark complexion. He had short black hair, a white t-shirt, light blue jeans and tennis shoes.

The closer we get to the election more lawn signs supporting either candidate are being stolen from private property. Sadly, my home was visited last night as were, apparently, a lot of homes on California Blvd. west of Orange Grove. While sign thievery is a nuisance it’s also a crime. It’s also evidence of a serious character defect. I would hope that those so deficited would consider redeeming themselves by spending their time and energy (and gas used in lieu of a getaway) at the polls on 11/4 instead. That is if they’re even old enough to vote.
